Now go to page 3 and enter the “Header and Footer” mode by double clicking on the header. On the Ribbon in Navigation section press “Link to Previous” to remove the link between previous section. Now you can add your header and footer and it will start from page 3. (If you're working with the demonstration file, Word won't let you create a new style using the same name, so don't worry when you see the warning.) Figure D Click New Styles to create a new style. First I removed the soft line break in the header but that didn’t put the two lines onto one. Then I put the cursor at the beginning of line 2 and pressed the backspace key. That got rid of the soft line break and put line 2 onto line 1. I thought I had it! But as soon as I moved out of the header area, Word automatically switched back to two. New chapter
The template contains 3 sample chapters. Add your chapters by deleting the sample chapter heading and entering the text for your heading. Or, to create an additional chapter, follow these steps:
- Click where you want to insert the new chapter heading and insert a page break (see Section and page breaks).
- In the Styles Toolbox, click Chapter 1 - Heading 1 style. The chapter number will appear.
- Click after the chapter number and enter the text for the chapter heading.
New subheading
Follow these steps to create a new subhead within a chapter:
- Type in the text for the subheading.
- Click the style that appears in the Style Area left of the subheading.
- In the Styles Toolbox, click the style you want to apply. Use “Heading 2” for a first-level subheading, “Heading 3” for a second-level subheading, etc.

In a document based upon a Word Processing Template, running heads are the default until you insert a Section Break.
The Header is there. Hover the cursor over the top of the page until you see a Header box. Or, turn on Show Layout (View > Show Layout).
If your document is based upon a Page Layout Template, you must turn Headers (and/or Footers) on in
Inspector > Document tab > Document button.
Again, hover the cursor or choose Show Layout to see Headers and Footers.
Insert page numbers into a Header or Footer (or a Text Box) with Menu > Insert > Page number.
